This year, for the first time, every New York City borough will host a St. Patrick’s Day Parade that allows L.G.B.T.Q. That milestone will be celebrated on Sunday with a new parade on Staten Island, part of a deal brokered by Mayor Eric Adams. It’s the result of decades of work by activists like Brendan Fay, an indefatigable Irish immigrant who began lobbying for the inclusion of gay marchers 34 years ago. “There has been a huge cultural transformation that I have lived through from 1990 until today,” Mr. Fay, 65, said this week as he prepared to march in the Staten Island parade. Most of New York’s elected officials, who plan to march on Sunday, have boycotted the borough’s original parade for years.

CNN —A peculiar fossil has helped scientists discover an unusual bird that lived among the dinosaurs 120 million years ago, and the find is changing the way researchers think about avian evolution. Enantiornithines are known as “opposite birds” because they had a shoulder joint feature that greatly differs from the ones modern birds have. “Before Imparavis, toothlessness in this group of birds was known to occur around 70 million years ago,” Clark said. When Jingmai O’Connor, the Field Museum’s associate curator of fossil reptiles, visited the Shandong museum’s collections a few years ago, the fossil caught her attention. While modern birds have fused forelimb digits, enantiornithines still had independent movement in the “little fingers” on their wings.

CNN —Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick penned an emotional thank you letter to the “Patriots Nation” in Sunday’s Boston Globe. “Nowhere in America are pro sports fans as passionate as in New England and for 24 years, I was blessed to feel your passion and power,” Belichick wrote. “The Patriots are the only NFL team representing SIX states but in reality, Patriots Nation knows no borders. I loved coaching here and, together, we experienced some amazing moments.”Belichick spent 24 seasons as the Patriots head coach, leaving the team in January. Belichick has 333 total victories (both regular and postseason) – the second most all-time behind Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula’s 347.

But on Monday, Mr. Banks said there had been “many rumors and misinformation” about what happened. “Violence, hate and disorder have no place in our schools,” Mr. Banks, who himself attended Hillcrest in the 1970s, said at a news conference. “They feel a kindred spirit with the folks of the Palestinian community,” Mr. Banks said, adding that the “notion that these kids are radicalized” was irresponsible. On Monday, Mr. Banks and other city leaders attempted to quell the mounting online backlash against students at the school. Some Hillcrest students had openly discussed their plans in the lead-up to Nov. 20, the two teachers said.

According to the census, Queens is the most racially and ethnically diverse county in the continental United States; it’s hard to think of a nationality or culture that isn’t represented there. Immigrants are almost half the borough’s population and more than half its work force. And no, Queens isn’t an urban hellscape. It’s also relatively healthy, with life expectancy around three years higher than that of the United States as a whole. But Trump has declared that migrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” — a phrase that, to steal from the late, great Molly Ivins, might sound better in the original German.

CNN —Scientists have rediscovered a long-lost species of mammal described as having the spines of a hedgehog, the snout of an anteater and the feet of a mole, in Indonesia’s Cyclops Mountains more than 60 years after it was last recorded. Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna, named after British naturalist David Attenborough, was photographed for the first time by a trail camera on the last day of a four-week expedition led by Oxford University scientists. A different echidna species is found throughout Australia and lowland New Guinea. Kempton’s team survived an earthquake, malaria and even a leech attached to an eyeball during their trip. They worked with the local village Yongsu Sapari to navigate and explore the remote terrain of northeastern Papua.

‘Gran Turismo’ Review: Once Upon a Pair of Sticks

Since the late 1990s, the Gran Turismo racing games for PlayStation have brought in billions of dollars, rivaling the box-office bounties of some movie franchises. It was only a matter of time before a movie offshoot arrived, following in the tracks of other live-action adaptations of PlayStation games, including last year’s “Uncharted.” “Gran Turismo” the movie tells the true (but unlikely) story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo maven who became a professional racer of actual cars on actual tracks. Mardenborough’s leap from pixels to asphalt was an effective advertisement for Gran Turismo as more than a game, but his transition wasn’t all smooth. After Jann’s father (Djimon Hounsou) says there’s no future in gaming and brings Jann to his job at a rail yard, Jann goes off and wins a contest held by Nissan to recruit promising Gran Turismo players. Once again Jann exceeds expectations and beats out a more TV-ready competitor for the chance to race professionally.

At South Brooklyn’s Beaches, a Battle of the Buoys

Eight years ago, Capri Djatiasmoro watched helplessly as four Jet Skis ran over her friend while he was swimming at Brighton Beach. Decades ago, a line of buoys ran parallel to the shore, marking the boundary between swimmers and boaters. “Some boat and Jet Ski drivers don’t even know there is this law,” said Ms. Djatiasmoro, 72, a retired advertising executive and avid open-water swimmer who lives in Brooklyn. “Some know, but in the open water it’s hard to tell exactly where that mark is.” Jet Skis regularly come very close to the borough’s beaches, she said, especially in the late afternoon, after lifeguards have left for the day. “I love the ocean, I love swimming, and I want to keep people safe while enjoying these things,” she said.

When Fabricio and Amy Pazmino started thinking about leaving their home in Colts Neck, N.J., to move somewhere on the Jersey Shore, they immediately thought of a place where they had spent several happy post-college summers, packed into small beach bungalows with friends for season-long rentals. After nearly five years of searching — and repeatedly being outbid — the Pazminos finally found their beach house this year: a four-bedroom, four-bath home in Manasquan, near the Glimmer Glass inlet, that they bought for $970,000. The colonial-style house, which they moved into in March with their three daughters, was built in the 1970s, but they refer to it as a “post-Sandy home,” because it is one of many in this oceanfront borough that were severely damaged and rebuilt after the hurricane swept up the coast in 2012. That storm set in motion a process that has changed the image of this formerly funky beach town. Less than 10 years later, an influx of city people seeking refuge during Covid helped cement the Monmouth County borough’s more polished image.

Brooklyn’s latest addition to the New York City skyline, the Brooklyn Tower, is offering its residents those bragging rights. “We took advantage (of the space).”The Sky Park will also include a playground and dog park. STRATFORD, England, June 29 (Reuters) - Celebrated British actor Geraldine James thought it was a joke when she was asked to take the lead in the Royal Shakespeare Company's latest production of "As You Like It", a comedy of young love. Playing at the Royal Shakespeare Company's home in Stratford, central England, until Aug. 5, the production is in step with a trend for experimental casting - last year Britain's Ian McKellan, now 84, played the student prince Hamlet. She brings her craft "to a role and words that in more kind of traditional casting, we wouldn't be able to hear". Her one criticism of Britain's greatest playwright is that his best female roles, such as Rosalind, are young. Mr. Brent was renting the ground floor of an attached brick house across from Inwood Hill Park, at the top of Manhattan. [Also in Real Estate: E-Bikes Are Exploding Every Week in New York City, Causing Fires and Killing People. “I really need access to blue and green stuff — rivers and trees,” Mr. Brent said. Still, parts of the neighborhood were noisy, with revving motorcycles and loud music, which concerned Mr. Brent. “New York City creates unique challenges to recording environments.”Among their options:
New York City police officers detained the driver of a U-Haul truck that struck several pedestrians Monday morning in Brooklyn, officials said, a “rampage” that left one person dead. Officers pursued the truck through the borough’s Bay Ridge neighborhood, where video clips on social media showed the U-Haul rolling along sidewalks and striking a person on what appeared to be an electronic bike. The New York City Fire Department received calls for injured pedestrians starting around 10:30 a.m., the department said.

Andrea Riseborough’s character Leslie is an outcast in her small West Texas town, where she’s known by locals for having squandered a lottery jackpot and her relationship with her son. In the run-up to this year’s Academy Awards, the most talked-about film is one that barely anybody has seen. “To Leslie,” an indie drama about an alcoholic mother seeking redemption, initially grossed only about $27,000 in an abbreviated theatrical release on its way to the video-on-demand market. When Oscar nominations were announced in January, many in Hollywood were surprised to see the film’s star, Andrea Riseborough, on the list of best actress nominees with more expected names Ana de Armas, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.
